If two things have become clear during the global pandemic, they’re this: First, our health is of greatest importance. If we hadn’t been tending to our physical, mental and spiritual well-being before, the necessity to do so is now front and center. And second, well, that overall well-being? For many of us, it’s directly tied to getting out of the house. Isolation from the rest of the world can exasperate mental health struggles and awaken other very real challenges.
Being locked up for an extended period of time may have you itching for adventure, novelty, exploration or simply an escape from the stressful daily grind, If that’s the case, it may be time to plan a wellness vacation. But for many of our comfort levels, it may not be the best year to hop on a plane and head to the busy beaches of St. Tropez, France.
Should you want to plan a healthy vacation without the crowds and with the best possible personalized service, fresh food and zero stress, may I suggest you head to Cayo Espanto, a private island resort off the coast of Belize?
Cayo Espanto — A Unique Wellness Resort Centered Around You
Cayo Espanto is like nowhere else on Earth. This five-star private island resort spans a few miles and only permits seven villas in total. Each of these villas is separated, screened and entirely private so you can spend your full wellness vacation without bumping into or seeing another traveler. The only interactions you will have is with the top-of-the-line staff, who are well trained to keep you safe and anticipate your every need.
For example, award-winning chefs prepare personalized meals to meet your dietary preferences, served just the way you like. Late-night candlelight dinner on the beach? No problem. Want a lazy brunch in bed? You got it. Do you want a meal at a different time than your travel companion? Easy.
Everything is catered to your whim, from the food to the itinerary. For a health-centric trip, you can book active adventures, such as exploring the barrier reef or going snorkeling. Or if you need to unwind in total relaxation, Cayo Espanto’s spa comes directly to your private villa. After a dip in your private stretch of the beach and walk through the palm-tree-lined pathway, you can get a stress-relieving massage, bask in self-care with a mani-pedi or enjoy aromatherapy treatments.
My favorite spa experience was offered with indigenous chocolate and was as decadent as you could possibly imagine. While I enjoyed my full spa day on the beach, my husband fished off our private dock — his own favorite way to relax in nature.
True Five Star Luxury in a Private Setting
Cayo Espanto is located about three miles from San Pedro in the Western Caribbean. I first landed in the Belize airport and was escorted to a nearly private Tropic Air Flight to San Pedro. There, I took a private golf cart to a private boat that dropped me off right at my dock. Even before Covid-19, Cayo Espanto offered privacy and personalization; that level of peace is built into the core of this experience.
The villas themselves are truly spectacular — with walls that shut tight at night for privacy and to keep the bugs out, but open wide by day to let the sea breeze drift through. You immerse yourself with nature, as the indoors and outdoors seamlessly flow. Villas feature both indoor and private outdoor showers. Singing birds awoke me each morning, rather than an alarm clock. I think I spent more time on my lounge chair overlooking the beach than any other piece of furniture. And staff made sure I was always comfortable there, with towels and pillows and always the icy, cold beverage. Staff keeps an eye on the schedule and clock, if you have any activities planned, so you can truly let go of all responsibility and experience what the ultimate vacation should feel like.
All amenities are luxury level from the fine Frette sheets to the cushy slippers. Yet there’s no need to dress to impress or even bother with shoes. The sand between your toes keeps you grounded while the service here is above and beyond.
A Private Island Dream Getaway Come True
As we search and plan for our next wellness vacation destination, keep this one in mind. Yes, it’s possible! You really can stay on a private island with your own stretch of beach. Trust me when I say it’s the ultimate travel dream come true.
